Kate Nash - Made of bricks

So I decided a while back to hear what was happening in the world of music. I had a subscription to SPIN I don't even remember how, but I had it and it talked about stuff and said that some of it was good and some of it was bad. With a skeptical heart and low expectations, I picked the glowingest review that month and decided to give the album in question a listen. And thus I came to hear Kate Nash's album "Made of bricks". It should be called "Made of bricks of shit".
SPIN raved about how this 20 year old songstress crafted songs on a piano and sang about 20 year old stuff but did a really good job of it. Well, the songs were really just crafted by her producer. The piano playing that happens sounded like she was reheating "heart and soul" and let's face it, we all got sick of hearing that one at school assemblies when we were like 8, so no props there. There really isn't that much piano, because she can't really play it very well, so the producer threw together some "hip" and "retro" styled synth parts to carry much of the album. Oh, hooray. Lyrically, yeah, it's a 20 year old singing about 20 year old shit. Not particularly well, not particularly poorly. The 20 year old ship has long since sailed for me, so I couldn't care less about anything she has to say. Even "Shit song", which one might rightly assume I'd be intrigued by (and I was, until I heard it live up to its title) was a vapid song about how 20 year old dudes are relationship idiots. Doye, Kate, but so are 20 year old women, so shut yer gob, already. Pretty much every song has 8 bars somewhere in it that sound good. And she has a pretty good voice, to be fair. But the only tune on the record I can listen to straight through is "Foundations". It's kinda good, but way too slick, and you know she didn't do anything more than sing over whatever her producer told her to sing over, so it's hard to cut her a break for it. It's funny to me that SPIN purveys this stuff as the hip, indie, alternative, smart thing, when it so plainly just isn't. Whatever. I guess that's why I never noticed when my subscription lapsed.
