Happiness - Tar... Feathers split

Well, I didn't expect this to happen. I was directed to a website where musicians put their stuff up for free download. It has a searchable database, but mostly you have to poke around and click on links and stream things to see if any of them are worth checking out in further detail. I clicked on this one because the site shows you a little flag where the band is from and this flag was Swedish, and I feel like there's just something in the water in Sweden that makes for good tunes, so I went ahead and just downloaded this. It's a 4 song EP. So 3 of the songs I like pretty well. The odd one out, called "The C.I.A." has a lot to be said for it, but it ends up running too long and is kind of overwrought in a "Indie flavor of the month" sort of way, so the good sort of comes up short. However, comma, the rest is pretty decent. The first song, "Look at that rabbit go", sort of shows us what to expect throughout: Early 80s synth-pop/new wavery with guitars, and it's a pretty decent tune with a nifty drum line and good interplay between the guitars and keys. The 2nd track is kind of too much, and the 3rd, "Neighbourhood", is a nice shuffly song with a good synth hook and good guitars. The last cut, though, "Feet fail me again" is the best on the EP. It has an awesome guitar intro that sets the tone perfectly, then it turns into what could easily fit on a Talk Talk record with its moodiness giving way to burbly synths then back to sullen guitar parts with Cure-ish singing throughout. I can think of a couple people I know who read this blog who will think I'm way off the reservation on this one, but whatever. Listen to it here. It's no skin off anyone's ass if you do. I hope I hear more from these guys.
